Voorsanger Architects PC was based in New York City and currently operates out of offices in California, New York, and Florida. Bartholomew Voorsanger and Edward Mills left their positions as design associates in I. M. Pei & Partners’ office to begin their own firm, Voorsanger & Mills Associates, in 1978. In 1990, the two parted ways and the firm was reorganized as Voorsanger & Associates Architects. Around 2003, the firm became Voorsanger Architects PC.
Over the years the firm developed an international reputation for their unique urban work and for integrating nature into their designs. The firm won numerous awards at the city, state, and national levels for their custom-designed houses, museums and cultural institutions, and a variety of civic and commercial projects mainly in the transportation and education sectors. Their work has also been recognized and awarded by many professional associations. Some awards received include: the Canon Prize from the National Academy of Design for Asia Society and Museum; the American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York State Award of Excellence for Blue Ridge Residence; the AIA National Institute Honor Award for Interior Architecture for Elie Tahari Fashion Design Offices and Warehouse; and the AIA National Honor Award for Hostos Community College Allied Health Complex.
“I have one rule in our firm: the best design idea stays in the project, and I don’t always have that one. What’s really important to recognize about designing architecture at this scale is that you can’t do everything, so you need to attract talented people who are exceptional.”
